Things That Suck: 3D

19.08.10

Every week I'm going to talk about something I hate, something that's overrated, or something that just flat out sucks. This week we discuss the "new" trend in cinema known as 3D. If you see the words 3D right in the movie's title, beware. It's usually a pretty good indication  that the director didn't feel like writing a script, casting any  decent actors and he spent most of the budget on his coke habit and the rest on the 3D.

But coke habits aside there are many more reasons 3D sucks..

Now keep in mind 3D is not some new technology like Hollywood would like you to believe. It's existed in some form since the 1920's but really came to life in the 50's. Back then they were usually low budget horror or sci- fi movies with bad special effects (hey, that sounds alot like today). They had titles like 'Cat-Women of Outer Space' and 'Space Attacks'. I'll bet your parents even went to a few drive-in 3D movies. Put on those ridiculous looking glasses and  watched movies in the comfort of their own car while your dad tried to cop a feel on your mom during the scary parts  (ha! Get that mental image out of your head). Though the demand for 3D died down around 1954 after theater projectionist became lazy and the quality of the product was declining.

Date rape, now in 3D!

Then in the mid 60's to about the late 80's 3D saw a revival with great films like 'Amityville 3D', 'Parasite' and 'Starchaser: The Battle of Orion'. With award winning films such as these it's a huge surprise the genre saw yet another decline near the end of the 80's. Yet that was the case. In fact at this point the only 3D films to do well were    hardcore porn movies or films that were damn close. The largest grossing 3D film up to that point was a softcore sex comedy called 'The Stewardesses' it was self rated X. Produced for only $100,000 but earned over $27 million ($140 million in today's money) despite being shown in just 800 theaters nationwide. Proving that men will pay good money for 3 dimensional boobies.

Still a better plot that Avatar

Now, Disney saw the success of 3D porn and failure of 3D everything else and thought to themselves "Hey! people like to interact with their 3D movies". That's when they began adding 3D to every attraction in their theme park as a way for the audience to interact with what there seeing on screen. Attractions like 'Michael Jackson's Captain Eo' and 'Muppet Adventures 3D' were huge successes, because what person doesn't want an IMAX sized Michael Jackson jumping off the screen and into their laps? I mean your kids could almost reach out and touch him. For the most part 3D's draw was relegated to theme parks even into the early 2000's.

"Unobtainium... seriously? That's what we're calling it?"

Then came 'Avatar'. James Cameron's 3D epic. Cameron saw how well Disney did with their 3D so he stole the plot of 'Pocahontas'. Next he added a lot of 1950's 3D by making them blue and in space. James then topped it all off with some successful 1960's 3D porn by adding a few human on alien love scenes. Sure 'Avatar' looks stunning but that's where it ends (seriously am I the only one who sees the blue 'Pocahontas' in space thing?) and since Avatar did so well every movie wants to jump on the 3D bandwagon. Now we have 'Piranhas 3D', 'Saw 3D' and even ''Jackass 3D' to look forward to. Just wait in a year Hugh Grant and Julia Roberts are going to make a 3D romantic comedy called 'My Funny Heart' where we get to watch Julia Roberts' horse face jump off screen like it'd right in front of us. The film will go on to win the Academy Award for best picture. As Julia and Hugh get up to give their acceptance speech the building will burst into flames because they've obviously sold their souls to the devil.
